Sporting KC Takes Easy 1-0 Victory Over Revolution

Foxboro, MA – In the team’s first match without captain Shalrie Joseph in almost ten years, the New England Revolution could not find the back of the net Saturday night as their sloppy play continued against Sporting Kansas City.  The Revolution settled for a draw against Sporting last meeting, but Jay Heap’s army clearly looked like a team still stunned from the Joseph trade tonight.

Ryan Guy was one of few players on his game Saturday night for the Revolution

Teal Bunbury’s breakaway goal in the 20th minute would be the only one of the match, putting Kansas City up 1-0 in a rather dry and uneventful game .  Major changes would decide the success of the Revs since Dimitry Imbongo would get the nod at forward, while Darrius Barnes and Florian Lechner would have to cover for the injured A.J. Soares in the back.  Even some late substitutions could not put the Revolution at par with Sporting, but the real question to ask tonight is: Do we already miss Shalrie Joseph?

It has been a rough season for New England fans, and the future only looks bleak without the face of the franchise.  Tonight’s loss marked the 5th win-less game in a row, and ultimately shrunk playoff hopes to a minimum.  Losing Shalrie will take awhile to accept, but the easiest way to mend the Joseph pain is winning.  The Revs will look next to the Montreal Impact, in a home outing on Sunday, August 12th.

Revs and Sporting Draw Among Heat

It may have reached triple digit temperatures in Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday night, but both the New England Revolution and Eastern Conference leader Sporting KC was prepared for a fight.  The home fans were loud and proud all over, as they cheered on Sporting to 16 shots, 6 of them on target alongside a dominant 63% of possession.  While Saër Sène and Clyde Simms both sat to start the match, the Revs kept up with Kansas City the entire first half without a problem.

Both squads had exciting goal opportunities in the first half, as Sporting’s Jacob Peterson shot a rocket just right of the goal post, worrying Matt Reis early on and letting him know there was more to come.  Lee Nguyen continued to impress, as he chipped a perfect floater over the box leaving Ryan Guy open for a running header. Guy’s shot was stopped by Sporting keeper Jimmy Nielsen just as it crossed the goal line, giving Jay Heaps and his Revolution plenty of reason to argue with the stubborn referees’ no call. Shalrie Joseph and Stephen McCarthy both displayed their important return early on, showing just what kind of impact they can have on a game.

Matt Reis was the story of the second half, executing enormous stops for the Revs during a long stretch of offensive pressure from Sporting KC.  The stadium however fell silent late in the half, when Kansas City right winger Kei Kamara elbowed Matt Reis right above the eye, requiring heavy medical attention on the field.

With a large band-aid wrapping over his eyebrow, Reis would eventually shake off his collision, and command his team to the final minutes of the game.  Despite some fantastic footwork from Fernando Cardenas in stoppage time, his late shot would not be enough to give the Revs a win and three points.

The Revolution did not want to settle for anything less than a win, but a draw and one point is nothing to complain about against the best team in the Eastern Conference.  A solid performance throughout, this game will hopefully give the Revolution some momentum for their next match against the Philadelphia Union. The game will be featured on the NBC Sports Network at 7pm ET next Sunday.
